Are Facelifts Painful? And Other Frequently Asked Questions About What Comes After Facelift Surgery

Health & Medical Blog

If you're thinking about getting a facelift, you likely have many questions about the recovery period. Knowing what to expect in the days and months following the surgery can help you decide whether or not facelift surgery is for you. These answers to frequently asked questions can help you make a final determination about whether or not to proceed with this kind of surgery.

Are facelifts painful?

Facelifts are generally mildly painful. Many people who get facelifts only take pain medication for the first few days after surgery. However, while many facelifts are not very painful, they can be uncomfortable. Many people feel tightness and swelling in their face in the days after the procedure. Sometimes people feel itchiness as the scars begin to heal.

Do facelifts bruise your face?

Facelifts can cause some bruising and swelling; however, your doctor will likely put heavy gauze on your face that will help minimize the swelling.

Can you engage in normal activities while you recover from a facelift?

In the first few days after your facelift, there will be many things that you will be unable to do. Your doctor may tell you not to put your arms over your head, or may instruct you not to wear clothing that must come down over your face. Blowing drying your hair, drinking alcohol and sleeping while lying flat will all be prohibited activities. Your surgeon will also instruct you not to shower for a period of time after your surgery. Your doctor will let you know when you can start engaging in these everyday activities once again.

You will also be instructed not to wear makeup for about a week, and you will be told not to wear earrings.

How long does it take to recover from a facelift?

Recovery time for facelifts can vary from one patient to the next, and the end of the recovery period can be difficult to gauge anyway because normal activities are resumed gradually in the days and weeks following the facelift. It's a good idea to leave your social calendar open-ended for about a month and a half following your surgery, just to be on the safe side.

Does facelift surgery leave scars?

All incisions leave scars to some degree. However, a masterfully-done facelift will leave scars that are virtually invisible, provided that you do your part to encourage the scars to heal properly, such as:

  • Avoid tanning beds until your surgeon tells you it's alright.
  • Avoid smoking during the recovery period.
  • Wear sunscreen on the scars.

Staying in Great Health Requires Exercise

My parents taught me healthy eating habits and I played outside a lot as a kid. Once I was old enough to work, I got a job as a waiter at a restaurant and kept waiting tables throughout high school and college. After college, I got my very first desk job, and my health started declining. I soon realized that even though I had never stepped foot in a gym, I was living a sedentary lifestyle for the first time in my life. I wasn't getting exercise playing outside or running around at work, so I decided to commit to going to the gym. My health began to improve and I now greatly enjoy bodybuilding. I know many other people are in ill health and can't figure out why, so I decided to start a blog to share my health tips and inspire everyone improve their health!
